According to her 2014 taxes made publicly available, Senator Clinton’s minimum rate for giving a speech was $225,000. This is the amount paid for 34 out of 41 of her speeches given that year, with the price for each of the remaining 7 speeches ranging from $250,000-400,000. Add it all up and Senator Clinton made herself a pretty penny giving speeches to Wall Street companies and others, $9,680,000 to be exact.
Now, in all fairness, we live in the land of opportunity, where capitalism reigns supreme, so to that note this is no big deal. However, for the political value, this is proving to be quite a speed bump in the road for Clinton’s campaign. For starters, many of these companies were directly or indirectly responsible for the 2008 collapse of the housing market and economy as whole. Rather than criticizing any individuals or companies that were directly or indirectly responsible for the collapse, Senator Clinton has only strengthened her connections with those on Wall Street. Even more significant, a speaking fee of a quarter million dollars makes one wonder what other benefits come with writing that check.
Clinton has yet to release the transcripts for any of these high-priced speeches, making some wonder what was actually said or promised by Clinton. It is difficult for many average folks to understand what on earth could be said in a speech that is worth that kind of money. The rational next step then is to assume that the money is less about the speeches themselves and more about what a Clinton in power means for these big businesses. Looking at Hillary’s continued support of Wall Street, it seems quite obvious what these companies are actually paying for when they cut that check: security. Hillary’s rebuttal to these accusations? Well, uh, Wall Street…New York…9/11…so, yeah. Huh?
