Attempted Coup in Turkey Leaves Hundreds Dead, Thousands Detained

In an unsuccessful attempt at overthrowing the current government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, over 200 people were killed and more than 1,400 injured in Turkey. It is believed that low-ranking military officers initiated the poorly-planned coup on Friday night, which had little support throughout the country. More than 6,000 individuals have been detained on suspicion of supporting or inciting the coup. Turkey has a democratic government, yet many fear that the repercussions of the coup attempt may lead to a “witch-hunt” of any and all of Erdogan’s political opponents.
