Weekend Marked by Protests in Milwaukee After Armed Man Shot

Protesters clash with police Saturday night in Milwaukee.

Violence erupted in Milwaukee over the weekend in response to a police shooting of an armed suspect. On Saturday afternoon, the victim was pulled over; he fled on foot, then aimed his loaded gun at the officer that pulled him over. One officer opened fire and shot the victim in his arm and chest; the victim died at the scene. Violent protests erupted in the city Saturday and Sunday, as protesters fired shots into the crowd, robbed and looted businesses, vandalized police cars, and destroyed buildings. 17 people had been arrested as of Monday morning. It’s not obvious what the protesters were protesting: the victim was armed (his gun was loaded with 24 rounds) and was overtly threatening a police officer. The police officer and victim were of the same race.
